First look at Ubuntu 17.10 or Artful

The daily build of Ubuntu 17.10 (which will be known as Artful Aardvark) can now be respun using my 'isorespin.sh' script with the Ubuntu build of mainline kernel v4.12-rc.

This means that for Intel Atom devices with the RTL8723BS WiFi chip such as the first versions of the Intel Compute Stick they will have both HDMI audio and wireless working OOTI (Out Of The Box ISO).

It is very early in the development/release cycle with Ubuntu 17.10 slated to be released on 19th October (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtfulAardvark/ReleaseSchedule) using either the v4.12 or possibly the v4.13 kernel (http://phb-crystal-ball.org). However the dependency on customized kernels is clearly gone and although Ubuntu 17.10 will be a milestone for Intel Atom support it will somewhat ironically also be the last Ubuntu release with Unity.

Update: Canonical have now confirmed "We intend to target a 4.13 kernel for the Ubuntu 17.10 release".

Sorry, is it just me or it is quite difficult to find the ISOs? :D
Can you help me, please?
Thanks

Thanks alot for the hardwork you've been doing with this project. I've used your older images on my gen 1 compute sticks and currently am working on a Intel Z83 mini pc. Your isorespin helped get hdmi audio which many users complained about not having when switching to linux. Sadly the only thing not working still is the bt/wifi that is a AP6234 chip. Thanks again.

Hi, thanks for share your great work! This is my first try, so have some question, I will respin ubuntu 17.10, but need efi 32 bit on 64 bit system, how "add" efi 32 to iso?

Good day!
I've tried most of your works but for some reason the audio is not working on my device, its Prestigio Visconte S.
On Windows 10, the driver is called Intel SST Audio Device (WDM)
When I check alsamixer in linux, there is nothing in the chipset tab, so I searched on the web for few months but still cant get it fixed. Do you have any suggestions?
And thank you for all the awesome works! :D

Linuxium please can i have this kernel: http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2016/12/updated-zesty-kernel-490-1112-upgrade.html ?

Without your kernel patch my Teclast x98 tablet had audio issue.

Thank you in advance

These are called class 3 systems. 64bit systems with bios created while smoking crack to run 32bit uefi. I had this problem first hand with the cube i10. I used refind to get it to boot. Heres a thread with more info https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/296096/32bit-efi-with-64-bit-linux-os-can-it-be-done

Unity is dead, right as nvidia finally just fixed some of the remaining bugs with it. (Insert every profanity here to describe Unity). This means with the 17+ releases they should also have full intel video support according to the 01.org roadmap.

I have a couple tablets. Intel SST is more of a vague term of various chips with various problems. The easiest fix is Bluetooth audio works fine.

***WARNING***
You can and I have already gotten the audio to work on tablets with these devices. I have also blown apart the speakers in one of my chinese tabs. It can and has for a few people including me caused damage to the speakers.

I owe Teclas Tbook 16 Power (Win+Android tablet with Cherrytrail 8750 8Gb RAM, 64Gb eMMC).
I can boot any recent Ubuntu 64bit iso written on Ubuntu Startup disk creator without problems (suggesting that it is 64bit UEFI firmware). Of course, WiFi, BT, not even touch screen are working at this stage, but it is irrelevant right now. I do have highest expectations of the most recent kernel 12, hence I gave a go to your script.
Tried your most recent GUI isorespin.sh and long story short it just wouldn't boot. It enters the rEFInd screen and when I press boot to ubuntu it just remains stuck in casper.
Tried different script combinations (with or without persistency, work directory etc.), same thing happens
Also I couldn't get rid of rEFInd even when I uncheck persistency (following your instructions). Secure boot is inactive (disabled).
I know you are dealing with Intel sticks only, but I think this is a more general issue and might deserve your attention.
Any suggestions? Many thanks!!!

You should be able to get wifi working using my Broadcom script 'linuxium-install-broadcom-drivers.sh' and the relevant '.txt' file from Windows.

Linuxium said...

@LoQue Queres: The isorespin script will add the 32-bit EFI entry for you automatically when it updates the bootloader.

Linuxium said...

@friend hello: Have you installed the UCM files using my 'linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh' script?

Linuxium said...

The kernel is superseded as I'm no longer supporting customized kernels. You should try with v4.11 or even one of the RCs for v4.12.

Linuxium said...

Unity was ironically polarizing!

The 'rEFInd' is optional as a bootmanager addition or included when persistence is chosen. For a simple respin just select ISO and Upgrade (kernel) and the respun ISO will only use GRUB.

Goran Sevo said...

It worked!!! Checked only ISO and Upgrade kernel as you said and it did not add rEFInd. Many thanks!!!!
I am absolutely certain that I did uncheck "rEFInd", "persistence" and "work directory" yesterday (but did check boxes to install few other things), and still, rEFInd respun iso was produced. Which made me ask this question:)
MANY THANKS FOR YOUR FABULOUS WORK!!! Which b.t.w. I follow with great admiration ever since your Ubuntu Rockchip development on Freaktab:)))

I tried putting it in respins or installing the same thing again after the installation. But no luck so far

I respinned the latest ubuntu 17.10 iso with your broadcom-drivers.sh and ucm.sh for asus x205ta. Everything works except the audio. How can I solve the audio problem ? I am presently running the ubuntu gnome provided by you in an older post in which everything works.

Hj, just checking in. This is a T100ha and I am using the latest isorespin. I've been playing with respinning 17.04 with the various v4.12 kernels, with less luck than v4.11. rc1 worked ok, rc2 boots (but I lost various functionalities, in particular touch screen stopped working which is a pain for startup with the rotated screen) and rc3 won't boot at all.

I suppose this is to be expected, but I thought I would let some others know and see what their results have been.

Linuxium said...

When you install after installation make sure you are connected to the internet so it can download the required UCM files.

Linuxium said...

Have you tried installing 'pavucontrol' and selecting 'speakers' instead of 'headphones'?

Linuxium said...

Thanks. RC3 has a regression bug so you can either compile your own version (see my latest post) or wait for rc4 on Sunday/Monday.

hello,I installed ubuntu, lack of identification of Wifi, how to solve.Thanks.

Linuxium said...

On which device and what is your wifi chip?

Unknown said...

I tried running this and the wifi still didn't work. The file from Windows was called 4345r6nvram.txt.

Can you 'pastebinit' a link to your 'dmesg' after booting?
